Fran is a fun workout, but it pushes you to the point of where you do not enjoy it until it is over. Karen is up there too!
Tell us about your sports & fitness background.
I played high school sports like football, track, and golf. I also did a lot of running and lifting weights while I was in the Marines.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I really enjoy wood working. I like to bake. Really any cooking I enjoy.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit Garland? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
My first time doing anything with CrossFit was at the CrossFit for Colbert event in June of 2013. It was brutal! I came in last place and was sore for more than a week. I knew right then I wanted to do more!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit Garland? (before / after)
My body looks like it did 15 years ago, but my overall health is much better than when I was 19. I feel better, and can do more than I could 10 years ago. I look forward to get stronger every week!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
The first thing I noticed was during the 30 day Paleo Challenge, I was able to get off prescription medication for acid reflux that I had been taking for years. Another huge benefit I have seen is strength in my shoulder that I have had issues with for years. When I started CrossFit, Robert wanted me to see my doctor that operated on my shoulder. He told me that I would be limited to what I could do and that I would not be able to do anything overhead. Robert worked with me, and we started slow. My shoulder would dislocate at least twice a year minimum. I have built up enough strength in my shoulder that I can do much more than I would have ever expected. On top of that, I have not dislocated my shoulder a single time since I started at CrossFit Garland. While we are still careful with it, I now see that things that I was told were impossible for my shoulder are now getting easier. That has been a huge gift!
Please share with us any of your favorite CrossFit / CrossFit Garland moments.
The 2014 Open was a lot of fun! I loved going in Friday nights and having everyone there cheering each other on and showing their support for other athletes. It showed me how lucky I am to get to know and workout with that kind of group on a daily basis.
Any advice for people just getting started in the CrossFit Garland tribe?
The First thing I would say is to be positive and receptive to the coaching staff. It can be frustrating at first, but if you come in ready to work, ready to learn, and a positive attitude then you will see gains that you would have never expected.
