When did you first start training at CrossFit Garland? In February of 2014
Favorite Benchmark WOD: Baseline. King Kong, because it involves my favorite lifts and gymnastic movements. 3 R.F.T. of 1 d.l. at 450, 2 muscle-ups, 3 cleans at 255, and 4 handstand push ups.
Least Favorite Benchmark WOD: Anything with long distance running and body weight movements. I’m built for quick speed and power, lol.
Tell us about your sports & fitness background: Like most kids I grew up playing a lot of different sports but got most involved in football around the age of 12. Discovered I was pretty good at it and made varsity as a freshman (even though the coach decided not to pull-me up), started from my Sophomore –Senior year at Richardson High Schol, and upon graduation received a football and theatre scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I love acting and pursue that as much as I can. Other than that I love to watch movies and as you get to know me you’ll find out I quote them as much as possible. I love to travel especially to somewhere I’ve never been. I prefer the mountains to the beach and love to be involved in my church.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit Garland? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? I came to find out about CF Garland through my friend, mentor, and former boss/ CrossFit Coach Tim Thackery. I met Robert and Todd, both were very friendly and I could tell that it was no accident or coincidence that we had met. My first WOD was the baseline, which is one of my favorites, and I loved the vibe of the gym and the attitude of the members.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit Garland? (before / after) I’m even more motivated and driven to see my body perform at the highest possible level than I have been in a long time.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? Applying what I learn from CF into my day to day life. For example, during a WOD, particularly a tough WOD, where you feel like you have acid for blood, can hardly breathe, and your mind is messing with you by whispering “slow down” or “stop” but you take yourself out of automatic, put it into manual, dig deep down, drive through, and finish. Maybe not with the score you had wanted but you at least didn’t give up. So when situations in my life seem to be insurmountable and overwhelming, I remember how I felt during one of those WOD’s, take my mind off of automatic, put it into manual, and do what needs to be done.
Please share with us any of your favorite CrossFit / CrossFit Garland moments.
The first time I “competed” in sectionals which was in 2010 before they started the open. It was a two day event, the first day I did less than optimal let’s just say. Going into the second day I was already out of the running to make it to Regionals but I still went, improved my standing by over 60 spots, I think, but what sticks out about it was the last event which was like 5 events, 3 min max rowing for cal, followed by a 3 min break, 3 min max deadlift at 275, 3 min max L-sit hold, 3 min max pull-ups, then a 400m run. Anyway, by the time I got to the run my lower back had locked up and my legs felt like they had peanut butter in them. I was jogging so slow it probably would have been faster if I walked, lol, but the last 100 m I was able break through the pain and actuall sprint and passed a couple of people.
Any advice for people just getting started in the CrossFit Garland tribe? Don’t let disappointments keep you from coming back. Stick with it, ask advice from other members or from us coaches, that’s why were here. Take joy in the accomplishments you make even if you think they are small, they are not, those small wins add up to a BIG Victory.
