When did you first start CrossFitting?
I had trained with Robert for a few weeks in late 2010, but couldn’t get up the courage to move into the CrossFit classes. Thankfully, Coach Todd convinced me to try it out again in September 2012 and after one class I decided to join.

Tell us about your sports & fitness background.
Many, many moons ago I played basketball and volleyball. I use that term loosely. Mostly I just wore the uniform and kept the bench warm. I am not naturally blessed with athletic talent or coordination, but I always loved belonging to a team.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I have a pre-teen daughter, so it has been a few years since I had enough “me” time to explore hobbies, but we are always up for trying something new and crazy. It’s those things that always make the best memories.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit Garland? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel?
I had trained briefly with Robert, so I had a vague idea of what functional movement exercises were but did not know how it all fit together until I tried a class in September 2012. It was a 6:00am class the day after Labor Day. To make it there from where we live, I had to wake up at 4:45am! The 400m jog left me winded and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. The movements were all new and I am fairly uncoordinated, but the people in that class- Todd and Jennifer and Jody- were so welcoming and supportive that I wanted to come back.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit Garland?
(before / after) Biggest physical change- the way my clothes fit!! As a woman, it was incredibly hard to move away from using the scale to measure success. With CrossFit, I have gained muscle while losing fat so the scale doesn’t seem to budge, but my britches started falling off!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
Goodness, how much room do I have to answer this?
1. Confidence. I have had a lot of success in other areas of my life, but I have always struggled with my weight and working out. I truly believed that it was something that I could not do. I was not strong enough and I did not have much endurance. Being able to clearly measure my success as I gradually am able to lift heavier weights has been a huge boost to my confidence. It has shown me that even the most daunting of challenges can be overcome with the support of your community and through small victories.
2. Friendships. They say that going through a disaster situation brings people closer together and that is true of CrossFit. Not so much that it is a disaster, but that each day you are battling your own internal issues but with the support of your team. The folks in class become so much more than just work out partners. They become the people to support, encourage and motivate you in the gym and the ones that you can share a good laugh with outside of the box.
3. Marriage. My struggles with weight were not something that my husband could relate to and so my successes in the gym were tough to celebrate together because he had no real frame of reference. Having him be able to join me here has added a whole new level to our partnership. Even though our goals are different, we can participate and encourage each other through it and truly understand the significance of the victories.
Please share with us any of your favorite CrossFit / CrossFit Garland moments.
Ok, this is where I start getting real emotional… the one question that hasn’t been asked so far is “what brought you to CrossFit?” My reason is that I started to see that my attitude of defeat when it came to my food/health issues was starting to affect my daughter. I knew that I could never convince her that we are all capable of achieving all of our dreams if I was showing her that I didn’t even believe it. I knew that what I did was much more powerful than what I said. If she saw me giving up when it was hard, then she would have no reason to believe that she shouldn’t do the same. Many, many days when I wanted to give up, I would think about having to go home and tell her that I quit. It made me get my tail back in the gym every time. I wanted her to see that even if I wasn’t the best, that there was honor in trying and that she should strive to live that way. I was extremely fortunate to have found a CrossFit home that allowed me to include Maya whenever we have a chance. My favorite moments have been the drives home or those few minutes when we are talking before bedtime when she tells me what she liked best about the WOD or how cool it was that she could use the 24” box or how strong she feels or how proud of me that she is. I may never know what it is like to win a CF competition, but that’s okay because these moments with her feel pretty damn good.
Any advice for people just getting started in the CrossFit Garland tribe?
Don’t quit. It is easy to let life get in the way and convince you that your time should be spent elsewhere. I know. Get to know your fellow tribe members and talk to them. They are real people who face some of the same real challenges. They probably have some good tips/tricks for making it work. You are not alone.
